There is nothing like the flavor an heirloom apple, picked half an hour ago, and sliced for the table half a minute ago. That’s why the Urban Homestead was started back in 1992—to help supply home orchardists with some of the best apples ever grown.  Apples were once a staple in the American diet; they were used for everything from making cider to fattening hogs.  We carry more than 100 of these old-time sorts, noted for their taste and quality.  We offer a number of modern apples, as well.  Our trees are grafted onto semi-dwarf (EMLA 7 and EMLA 111) rootstocks.  These stocks make for vigorous, free-standing trees, adaptable to a variety of soils.  Semi-dwarf trees grow 15 to 25 feet tall and can produce good crops of apples for thirty years or more.

We are listing several new or unusual varieties in the body of this year’s catalog:  Gilpin, Lowry, Red Horse, and Seek-No-Further.  Also Henry Clay, Ladyfinger, and Reasor Green, a variety first introduced by our great-great-grandfather, C.C. Davis, in 1887.  Economics dictates that we keep a tight rein on the number of varieties we graft each season.  We have access, however, to a large number of stock trees, and offer a custom grafting service for some of the harder-to-find varieties.  These are listed on page 15 of the catalog.  Orders for custom grafts must be placed no later than February 15th.  Custom grafts are grown for one season and shipped as whips in the fall.

Our nursery is open to the public most Saturdays through the spring, and every Saturday beginning the 2nd week of November through Christmas.  We are a small, family operation, so please call ahead so we can plan for your visit.  We are closed on Sunday.  If you have any questions about the varieties we list, or would like more information about the other plants or supplies in the catalog, please contact us at the email address above, or call between 9AM and 4:30PM, Monday through Saturday.  We give tips on grafting to anyone interested and count it a privilege to share with you a part of our rich, pomological heritage.  We look forward to supplying your orchard needs.
